Hey guys,

Im trying to make an aspx page at the moment that can capture the username of the person viewing it - ie their windows logon name for our network.

currently it captures the name of the person (ie me) logged onto the machine when run locally off of visual studio 2005. However when i load it onto the intranet it runs and gives a blank for the username...

authUserName = User.Identity.Name

this is the line im using to capture the username. So i have a couple of questions - is it possible to "rip" the username of the persons windows account so we can capture who is submitting data without them having to put their lan id's in? and if so how?

Thanks for any help!

I beleive that would be a breach of security, having a web page collecting local information..   this only way to do it would be to change the local users secutity to allow his to occur and even then there would be security messages

I'm new to DNN, Chris, but I do know that information is only populated when IIS "enable anonymous access" is NOT checked.  This assumes your aspx page in on your network.

Depends on how it's being done. On a local intranet situation it's a common practice to be automatically logged into an intranet site and the only way that can happen is to pull the login information from the user's computer. Also if the website is in the Intranet or Trusted Sites in Internet Options there won't be any security warnings.

To the original poster, look at the Active Directory documentation for setting up IIS to do what you want and also look at the source code (WindowsSignin.aspx.vb and OnAuthenticateRequest.vb in particular) for tips on how to pull that information from the logged in user.

yes the only way would be to use Active directory any other method you still be a security issue.  having websites external or internal accessing the local system is a no no.
