I think the problem is indeed where you have margin: 0px auto;  it needs to be margin:0 auto; 

The other thing to do is in the body class put text-align: center;  Then float/allign all your text manually from that point on.  I'm not good at tracking which bugs are for what browsers, but I think that fix is for IE6.0 if that helps at all.  Give it a try..I"m just learning too so feel free to send me any results you come up with!

IE does not support "margin:0 auto" in Quirks mode (HTML transitional)

If you don't want to change the doctype use this:

* html body{
text-align:center;
}

Set the text-align to left for the container element

It's hack but it works

There are some free CSS skins here: http://skintemplates.dnncreative.com you can download the code and see how they work for centering the skin. - Plus there is code included for setting Doc Type to XHTML transitional etc. so it might help to give you a head start.
