Hi,

I'm currently running a live 4.5.3 site and would like to upgrade to 4.8.0.  I've never done an upgrade before, and I'm a little paranoid about messing it up.  A few questions:

1) I want the latest version of the all the modules as well as the core.  Does this mean that I download the Install, not the Upgrade?  Does it matter if I use the Install package if I already have 4.5.3 installed?

2) I only have FTP access to my server.  Is it okay to simply unzip the package on my local machine, then FTP all the files to the hosting server, overwriting all existing files?

3) After updating the web.config, the readme.txt says that I should browse to localhost/DotNetNuke.  Seeing I have only FTP access to the host machine, can I just navigate to my domain?  Is that the same?

4) If I have other modules installed (e.g. ActiveForums), will the upgrade be at all destructive to them?  (Assuming the modules are compatible with 4.8.)

5) Are there any gotchas I should know about?

Thanks!

Norman

Norman

May I give you a suggestion.
Never upgrade a live site. Always download the live site. Run this site local. Make the necessary changes and upload then to your live site.
Dnncreative has a few good videos to do that.

As mentioned above you must test the upgrade first, in the end you might need to make the changes directly on the site if you don't have an easy way to restore a database backup, but at minimum you should test it first and be 110% sure that you have valid backups before you start.

I have tutorials available on my site (for free) that include installation, upgrade, backup and restore.  http://www.mitchelsellers.com

ActiveForums 3.6 is not compatible with DNN 4.8 presumably due to some changes in the CBO class according to Active Modules. They released a patch for 3.7 to fix this.

Best regards,
