Hello,

As most know DNN has an integrated SMTP setting to allow the portal to send notification mails etc. I would like to know how the mails are sended to a mailserver in order to solve the following problem, suggestions etc are very welcome too! When i fill in all required information, that is serverip:port and username/password (from the mailserver) with anonymous authentication (this is allowed by our mailserver) and press the test button to see if it will work, it gives the following error:

"There has been an error trying to send the test email. The error is: Failure sending mail. Unable to connect to the remote server"

Port 25 is wide open, we also did a telnet session on the IP and port that we filled in the SMTP section of DNN, which was a success. Hope someone has a solution to this!

PS: Using Exchange Server and DNN 4.6.2

Just a suggestion, try mail.yourwebsite.com as the smtp server. This is what most host use. You should not have to enter the port. I think mail uses port 21, not sure about that though. Also enter in your name (allot of host want the full name not just 'john' but 'john@yoursite.com'  and the password your use with your mail program to get your email. Let me know if you are still having problems.

hello and thanks for your reply!

I do not understand why mail.yourwebsite.com should work, does DNN have an internal Mail Server or ....... ? I do not have an Exchange server runningon the local DNN server, but it is located somewhere else, i connect to it using its WAN ip with username/password of an Exchange User. Please explain what you mean with mail.yourwebsite.com.

Any other suggestions are still very welcome to help me solve this issue!

PS: Port 21 is FTP. Port 25 is mail :)

dnn does not have an internal mailserver

The most probable cause of your troubles is that either the port is blocked somehow, or the user is rejected.

Can you try connecting to your mailserver from the webserver using telnet. Syntax would be like this:

telnet [yourmailserver] 25

Replace [yourmailserver] by the hostname or ip address or your mailserver. It is important you do this from the webserver. If telnet can connect you should see something like

220 nameofyourmailserver

If the connection succeeds, the problem is somewhere else.. but where...? (i really wouldnt know)

if the connection fails, you will see that message eventually.... The problem is probably a firewall somewhere between your webserver and your mailserver

Thanks for your post ErikB. As mentioned before, I did a telnet session on port 25 and it succeeded, so firewall is not the problem.

Though, I am really interested in the way DNN sends the mail messages from the portal to the mail server, maybe this could be the solution to my problem.

Suggestions etc are very welcome!
