Does DNN skinning make use of the new 2.0 master pages?

Does DNN security make use of the new 2.0 building blocks for users/roles?

What else may have changed to make use of the (obvious) 2.0 features?

(I am new to DNN, have started with 4.0.2, and am a winforms programmer with very few ASP.NET skills).

DNN does not make use of master pages of 2.0 because they are not nearly as flexible as the skinning solution, overall.

DNN 3.x is built on the same security model building blocks refered to as MemberRole. (The dll backport offered by MS for the 1.1 framework).

Overall, DNN4 is not using the new features of .NET 2.0. There are a few that are being used, but not too many, in the grand scheme of things. One important thing to note about DNN4 is that it was released to provide the community with an .NET 2.0 version of DNN as soon as possible - and this purpose was met quite successfully. From what I remember, it was released within a week of the official .NET 2.0 release (maybe sooner).

The core team is looking at implementing more .NET 2.0 features, now, tho. If I were to give my opinion - which this has nothing to do with the core team's plans - I would venture to say that DNN won't take full advantage of .NET 2.0 until a 5.0 release. I'm sure the 4.1 release will improve upon that some; however, a lot of changes will need to be made to fully support the new .NET 2.0 features. We'll get there, just be patient with us
