According to Jakob Nielsen, major expert in web usability, including an internet-wide search functionality is "a violation of guideline #52 for homepage usability: if people want to search the Web, they'll go to their favorite search engine, not your site." (full article is about Amazon.com and the quote can be found under "What's Bad")

Now we're going to have a ton of new web sites out there built by people who don't know this is a usability issue, with this option enabled on their search boxes. I just think the DNN search could have been improved in more advantageous ways, like improving how it handles misspellings and things like that. Also, maybe cleaning up the results page to not use tables any more, as they're totally not necessary.

This will not exactly answer you question, but it may address some issues you might be facing, as well as add at least a little more insight into it.

*EDIT*  Hmmm...  My link never showed up!

Not only is it a useless option, but pop-up blockers prevent it from even working!

I like the issues you bring up.  I agree that the search has other areas that should be worked on more.  For instance, although I include the search feature in my skins that I sell, I do not use it on most of the sites I put together.  The search simply is clunky, buggy, and slow.  I rarely get the results returned to me that I am looking for, and they are not presented in the most aesthetic way.  CSS aside, there is much to be looked at in the algorithms used to perform the search.

There is no algorithm. It's just a SP that looks for your exact input in the DB and returns tabs that match it

A couple articles I've written on the subject:
