We have a customer who is using LDAP for their users. What is the roadmap for the LDAP authentication provider - is there a planned release for this?

The authentication provider has been abstracted from the core, so you can replace it with your own if you like. Out of the box it works with AD. Read through Mike Horton's blog.

I have heard this for months but I still haven't seen anyone do this.
It seems to me that if it were that easy then someone would have responded to the many requests with a solution using the current framework.
