Our site is being overhauled and recently was migrated into DNN.  I have been told that if we have our contracted IT guy make it so that the User Name in the login is changed to require an E-mail address, we might make upgrades to future DNN versions and modules more complicated, and we may have to call him in to facilitate the upgrades in the future.  Any truth to this?

Unfortunately, there is 100% truth to this.  DNN does not facilitate this adaption of login.  It must be changed to do so.

Having done this myself, I can tell you that in order to do this right, it requires both changing the core code of DNN, and potentially writing custom Authentication, Profile, and Role providers to facilitate and handle any unwanted or unknown exceptions in work flow.

* EDIT *  I almost forgot...  In order to provide a favorable end user experience, there are several places in the localization files that would need to be updated and maintained during each upgrade as well as the previously mentioned providers and code changes.  The localization changes are mostly to make sure that where the term "User Name" is, it is changed to "E-Mail Address".  That is really only a usability update.

Uhhh.....

Not sure how to reply to this.  Is he suggesting a change to one of the outtside security providers, LiveID or OpenID for example?  I'm not sure how requiring an email or a unique email would require any extra work in an upgrade.

Jeff

[EDIT]  After reading HisMightiness' response, I understand the request as using the email address as the login, which I missed in the first post.  Now it makes sense.  Unless you use a LiveID for example, which needs an email address.  And seems to still be "not quite ready for prime time."

Jeff, unless you do not want to handle the ways that the end-user can get around being forced to use their e-mail address and to also facilitate the anonimity of a username vs. e-mail address, you will need to make changes in the core and providers to switch the expected username to the Display Name, and the e-mail address to the username.  Not to mention those items in my edit of my previous post.

Jeff:  It looks like we might have been typing at the same time (twice).  :)

To revisit the original question, this blog post might give at least a little insight into some of the complexities when facing this kind of change:
