When we create a child portal we have to go into the portal's settings and manually add the first portal alias. Although this should be automatic as part of the setup... it works.

The problem is when we add a second alias to the child portal. The alias is saved into the database, but when we access the child, the process that directs it doesn't work.

For example:

If I type in the first alias, www.aliasname1.com, the URL resolves to: http://www.mywebsite.com//Default.aspx?alias=aliasname1

If I type in the second, www.aliasname2.com, the URL resolves to www.aliasname2.com... and I get a 404, page not found error.

How do I solve this?

Thanks for your help.

Stan,

Standard procedure for the DNN site is to redirect you to an alias that does work if the alias asked for is not found.  Meaning -- in this case DNS may not be set up properly as it does  not seem that the  www.aliasname2.com is hitting your DNN site.

Can you verify that the DNS is set up properly and the request is being forwarded to your DotNetNuke site by IIS (check any host headers etc...). If so, you may need to restart your application by making an arbitrary change to the web.config file.

take care,

Ian

Thanks for the reply.

The DNS appears to be setup correctly, however they do have some a number of redirects setup in IIS. For example, www.mysite.com/your_page_on_mysite. Where your_page_on_mysite is set as a virtual directory and redirected to a page within the site. The goal is to enable a user to type a url rather than make them dig through the site.

Could this be causing the problem?

Stan,

Well honestly I cannot help but think this is the culprit.  I do not have any experience with this scenario in IIS myself, but if everything else looks to be set up properly -- i'd check in to removing those redirects and seeing if that helps your problem. Did you see that the host header was set properly?

Take care,

Ian
