Hi,

Is there a design reason why dnn has gone with file storage for file uploads instead of storing in database?

Couple of things to remember...

  • DNN's original heritage carries a lot of considerations with it.  We have to be attentive, with every upgrade, to supporting our previously installed customers.  We began with file based storage and must continue to support it.
  • One of our main considerations is that DotNetNuke is 'achievable' by most anyone.  DB based file storage can be expensive and price you out of many hosting situations quickly ( which limit SQL DB sizes ) when you start stuffing files in them.
  • File based storage is necessary for some things anyway, and so it makes a reasonable default.
  • DB based storage makes most sense in particuar application uses... and so there are ( naturally ) a number of modules out there which support DB based file storage for internal use.

Its not that we don't find it a good alternative ( for many circumstances )... its just not our default approach.
