Hello all

I'm new at this type of programming, having done many html web domains, but have tried to find information on how to change existing templates, graphics etc. I have been given full reign on a web site to develope a pleasing, well organized site, but haven't got the foggiest idea where to start.

I have tried to find litterature but it seems almost impossible to find anything that's simple to interpret. I can change anything, or do anything with html, but this is a whole different kettle of fish. Are there any other resources out there, or can anyone lead me in the right direction on where to start.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

I am exactly where you are. Everyone tells me just to download it and do it, but there are no instructions or anything included to show me how to get a basic website up that I can edit etc. I have a potential job depending on if I can get this down over the weekend. I can't afford not to figure this out.

Do I just unzip the file I downloaded and throw it all into a folder on my web host? I am confused.

If anyone knows where I can even download premade, blank websites in DNN for me to change and edit and configure it would be much appreciated.

This just does not exist since each installation is different.

Haven't you seen a documentation download on the main downloads page? It includes a nice installation guide you should start with before trying anything else.

even the documentation is confusing. i have a web design degree, and i have my own website, put it up on my webhost myself and everything, but the installation guide in the documentation might as well be in french.

I also can't tell where the "if youre installing on a network" area ends, and the "if youre installing it online" area begins. As far as I know the first step in installing online is to rename your release.config to web.config. Then, the next page(36) doesn't make any sense to me. At the end it says "now we have configured it, time to install". Wow, really? When did I configure anything? This all would be so much easier if the zip file would extract a folder that you just throw onto your webhost, and name the folder something special, and it just WORKS...and then you do all the modifying through the control panel.

I just don't see how all these people say "i dont even know how to make websites and i can do DNN" when I have a degree and I can't even decifer the installation guide.

This thread was great and came at just the right time.  I was trying to explain to my boss why we needed a web designer and not another web developer.  (me).  He really couldn't see the difference until I made him read this post showed him my site and then yours.  :)  I don't have an artistic bone in my body but I can code pretty well.

I can see where your having problems but give it a shot.  It's pretty simple and if you look over in the intall it forum there is a user that is buillding installers for guys like you that don't really want to digg in as deep as DNN can go.

It's sounds like what you guys are really wanting to do with DNN is work on the presentation layer.  The layer where you need to make things look nice and let guys like me mess with all the ugly bits behind the scences.

I don't think there really is any n-tiered web app that is just copy and go.  There is going to be some installing and configuration done at some point.  The difference is weather you are exposed to it or not.  Try one of the installer I mentioned above.  All the same things happen, you just don't see it.

Cheers,
