Hi All,

I've searched the forums for this answer, but haven't found what I'm after.

Is there a way to make the user choose a group (security role?) at registration?

In short, I created two groups; one for service providers and one for clients. When a client goes to register, I want him to be in the client group and a provider in the provider group since they will have different permissions to view pages, forums, etc.

Can that be done out of the box or will it require a little (or a lot of) tweaking?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick

you can add the option to the use profile and then run a sql script that sets the role.. OR I use an incredible modue called ucanuse user attributes. It allows me to create multiple variations of a registraton form and to add users to roles based on field selection. www.ucanuse.com

Thanks for that. It looks promising, but I should explain further...

I'd like the options of the registration and/or user profile to be driven by the choice of group. If the user chooses client group, then I want their profile to include just the basic info like name, email, and user name. If they choose the provider group, then I'd like the profile to include the same info as the client plus additional info like phone, website, address, services provided, etc.

Any further advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Rick

This is certainly doable with a little tweaking and/or added nominal investment, as suggested ucanuse can help you, but the first question I would ask is how do you plan for the 2 groups (clients vs providers) to identify themselves?

Will you have them use the same registration module instance thus asking them to identify themselves by establishing a custom field value?
Or will you have them navigate to seperate registration module respective to their group (role)?

In other words, your desired user experience for user registration on your portal will determine the best method for automatic role assignment.

Hmmm....

re: same or separate registration modules... I could go either way. What I want to do is have the registration form/profile require different info depending on which group the user is in. Ideally, I'd like the user to pick their group first, then proceed to the registration.

Would it be easier to do with one registration module or two? Thanks for the help..
