I have just installed 4.8 (i used the install after many problems with the upgrade).  My site has no content anymore, blank with no pages, no text, just the default skin.  My user ids and passwords don't work anymore  The only thing I can think of is that install overwrote the app_data/database.mdf.  If this is the case, can i force a re attachement to the old database.mdf?  My web.config and development.web both have the configuration, app settings and machinekey of my previous web.config file.

If i restore to my previous files, the content comes back.  I would how ever like to maintain the 4.8 installation as i cannot rollback the database install.

It seems that you are, in fact, overwriting your database file.  You will need to extract the install package somewhere and remove that file before you copy it over your site and run the upgrade.  If you can get your old database from your backup, you should just be able to put it in the App_Data folder, and the site will upgrade automatically.

Hope it helps,
