Ok, I'm not sure if what I'm looking at is the same issue as you describe, but it's worth noting. This isn't a complete tutorial, just an examination of the option Link Type URL. When you are adding a new feed using the News RSS feed module, you have a choice of options to specify the news feed source.
The radio control options for Link Type are:
- URL (A Link To An External Ressource) - the default
- File (A File On Your Site)
When you are linking to an external news feed, you add the URL of the news feed source in the Textbox for Location. The On-Line Help system indicates that if this is a first time reference to the URL, you merely add the URL to the textbox, then choose whatever stylesheet you need to render it. A default RSSv0.91 stylesheet is the only stylesheet available out of the box, and is the default stylesheet if nothing is selected. Then, you just have to click the Update command link to save the newsfeed.
Now, there's some confusing aspects to the addition of a news feed source, when the Select An Existing URL command is clicked. There's nothing really in the On-Line Help Documentation to use as a guide, and frankly I've never really used this option, until another DNNer brought it to my attention. However, the documentation kind of implies that if you've used a URL news source previously, it should show up in the dropdown list, or if you set up a news feed source, that it would be added to the dropdown list. At least that's what a few of us discussed in our review of what seems to be happening.
The reality is that the New Feed RSS module doesn't add anything to the dropdown list, which is populated from the URLs table. I'm know I missed looking into this option from day 1, so I'm just as caught off guard as anyone else. Now that I know about this quirk, I'm looking into it a little deeper. What I've found is that I can create a Links module, viewable by only Admins, and add a link pointing to a News source URL. Then, when I look at the dropdown list, when setting up a news feed source that URL added with the Link module will appear in the dropdown list. The confusing aspect to me is that this is really not the optimum way to provide a list of new source URLs. However, it is a workaround to the situation. I'm not comfortable with this approach, as it seems like Adding a URL directly from the News Feed RSS module is the preferred way, and the dropdown list should populate ONLY news feed sources, not just any Link URL because that is rather pointless (URLs to general sites are not going to render in the module, so they should not be listed.)
At any rate, I think this may be part of what you are seeing and experienceing. If not, please do give some more detail, as this is an issue I think needs some attention. If others have a view, please feel free to elaborate. I'm not the last word here, just an interested non-Core Team party. I use RSS news sources quite a bit, and thought I was pretty up on things, but this type of usage was new to me. So, if you know better, please share the info with us.
Thanks
