I have tried installing on local XP machine and windows 2003 server. Both have sql server 2005. Test connection to database works fine, but when the installing script runs it only creates the version table and then it hangs. Help!

Are you setting up with Visual Studio?  Or using IIS?  Michael Washington has some GREAT tutorials here http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/   That should help you get up and running.  On server2003 - make sure ASP.NET and NetworkServices have necessary permissions on the root of the site.
