Hi Gang,

i'm desperately trying to run through a successful backup and restore of my dotnetnuke site. i'm hosting with pipeten.co.uk if thats relevant.

i've bought both evotiva and xpidea and neither of them work, they just 'page cannot be displayed' or come up with permission errors even though the rest of dotnetnuke modules work fine with the write/read permissions on the server. i've tried it million times varying everything i can think of.

so i'm hoping someone can offer me a solution. i have to be able to backup and restore reliably.

i've tried DTS (or SSIS as i think its known now). i've made sure my local database is the same name as the remote database, same logins too. i click on my remote database, All Tasks, Extract Data. run through the wizard selecting all tables and views (i've tried just the tables, not the views also). it extracts it to my laptop's database no problem, but can i send the data tables back? no.    i think one time i managed it, but i'd lost track on the state of the local database after a frustrating number of tests, and when i tried accessing the dotnetnuke site through IE - Internal Server error. fantastic.

The error i'm receiving when i'm sending the data tables back has ranged from a number of non-descript errors to more recently the mumblings of something similar to "This would violate a PK_ in data table". it's like AAARRRHH. why hasn't dotnetnuke provided a solution?

i would love to find an ISP that can offer me all the things i need for hosting domains, as well as native backup support for SQL server. but i can't find one.

what does everyone else do? there must be a fail-safe process

please help a young and struggling developer have peace of mind!!

I remember not too long ago trying to do much the same and being very frustrated. Shared hosting environments make it tough to do because of access restrictions.

It also doesn't help that SQL Server 2005 (if that's what you're using) also made it tougher to get workarounds for the access restrictions. But maybe one of the SP's solved that.

I have since switched to all dedicated servers / all the time and will never go back. Kind of like switching from dial-up to DSL.

What finally became a viable solution when in a situation like yours was to rely on the ISP's database backup schedule. I would time any upgrades to soon after their scheduled database backup had taken place. If any problems, they could quickly restore the database.

For local testing, I would mirror all physical files locally, and then when I wanted to do a trial run of a set of upgrades (do yourself a favor and gang all of your upgrades up at once), would ask the ISP for the most recent copy of the database backup, copy it local, restore it, and test away to verify successful installations. Would then move to the live site and repeat the process.

Hope this helps.

I strongly suggest to find a host that provides you with options to backup files and databases, any solution from within DotNetNuke might not cover all files and reliable backups are a basic need when providing web sites professionally.

I agree with Sebastian on this one, the only true safe way to backup and move a site is to use a native SQL Server backup and a backup of the file system directly from the server.

Hello Matt,

We are the creators of BackupNative and BackupScript modules.

You should not have any problem with BackupScript. It works fine on any ISP. Please send us details about the problem you have. I'm 100% sure can be solved (and I guess they are related with web site / file system permission)

Thanks,

Horacio.-
