... And I have no idea where to start.  I do know that it is not advised.  I also know of no other way to get around this problem.

Please advise where to look for the source code to make a change to allow an email address like "first.last[at]myISP.com" (did not want that to hyperlink).

in latest versions of DotNetNuke there is a setting in Manage Users for the regular expression used to validate Email addresses
