I have recently upgraded my dnn application to 4.8 and been finalising the development of my website. In moving it to a dedicated server for the production environment. I have now started to monitor the events log more closely as the portals are no longer being 'tinkered' with.
The server hosts 2 production portals with a sql 2005 backend, I am noticing that on a daily basis; there seems to be a large number of page load exceptions, a smaller number of general exceptions & a few scheduler exceptions. On looking more closely at the event log, these occur on the ALL setting & relate to a PortalID -1. When the individual sites are selected no exceptions are occuring.

What is hapenning here, is it just background activity &  therefore can be ignored; or is this disclosing a more serious underlying database  issue; i.e. stored procedures, time outs? I am not a server administrator, just a keen hobyist but desperately wanting to maximise the performance of the dnn app.

You'll need to get used to looking at the log daily and try to figure out what the errors are. Some matter and some don't.

  • Always look at the Useragent field.. search spiders and bots cause a lot of errors that don't normally matter.
  • Use Google to search for DNN or dotnetnuke and what's in the InnerException field. You'll usually find results that match and will let you decide what to do.
  • Look at the AbsoluteURLReferrer and try loading the page yourself.. look at any referring URL's attached to it and see if they might have caused an error.
  • There are also certain ongoing errors that are impossible to deal with, but it is important to get used to what's going on in there.

I've had pages of errors in the past and over time have reduced it to a just a handful a day and those are mostly things I now understand.

Thanks Rob,

I'll keep a look out for the anomalies and make a point of checking the events log daily.
