I was also caught out with this issue more than once back at the start. There's no indication that it's going to happen and for newbies, there's no obvious solution when it does. I restored an earlier web.config and then compared and as a result I learned what was going on.. but that's just not an appropriate procedure for a module uninstallation.

I absolutely agree, most people have enough problems upgrading as it is, and dont need extra ones ...

My sugegstions is that if your module only needs changes to < appSettings >, then the best thing you can do is to instead create a separate file called "yourmodule.config".  Put all your settings in there and read them using the XmlDocument class.

Using this method allows seamless upgrades without requiring the user to make extra web.config changes.  Your users will thank you for it! :)

Of course if you need to make changes to other sections like < httpModules > etc, then you dont have much choice about changing web.config, and should do all the things mentioned above to make sure that the user knows about the changes and what to do in the event of an upgrade..

Please be aware, that DNN 5 will come with a new installer for all components, which shall solve most issues by providing better cleanup and rollback.

I can really appreciate the new installer and roolback capabilites but I still think that any reference in the web.config that is either altered from the core or required by a module to work should be commented.
