General comments:

  • Multilingual Feature has been announced (amongst other exciting new features) for DNN "Cambrian", which is the code name for a set of releases in 2008, starting with DNN 5.0. There has been no promise, that ML will be part of DNN 5.0 and a release date for any feature, which is difficult in an open source project relying on volunteer contributors.
  • Projects a driven by individual teams, which are steered loosely by the DotNetNuke Core Team. Each team manages its individual resources, strategies and limitations to struggle with. And from my personal experience, this is the most effective way to steer teams consisting of volunteering developers which are not always easy to handle.

If you need to implement an multilingual site now, get assistance from any of the ML experts in the DotNetNuke eco system and proceed now. They will also provide an upgrade path to core ML, when available.

Mitch, interesting and much needed input.

I'd say the progress of the core is outstanding right now..    never seen it better.

Progress of modules is for the most part terrible.. although there are a few exceptions which is obvious if you look at release dates.

The problem..   to me ..  is it's closed door ...   1 or 2 person teams and it appears to be a power thing..

You hit it on the head I think, and the other thing is that if you are not the project lead, you have no power to push things through regardless of if you have the time.

As I mentioned above, I am done pushing, if I hear back from the corp about options, I'll still help, but after pushing stong for over 6 months trying to get something done, I'm throwing in the towel and re-dedicating the time to furthering my free modules that are available at my site.

Thanks for the info.

I think i will going to use dnn 4.8 with the DSLocalizator module form dnn.tiendaboliviana.com. I'm going to try to rebuild this module into dnn standard pages witch makes it more easy to use. There are 2 possible ways to do this serveral pages one for each languages or serveral modules on one pages each module for one languages (and hide the rest).

Witch option i'm going to use i'm not sure because both have there advantage and disadvatage's.

Any again much thanks :).

Replies like Mitch's are why I consider DNN an over-priced "free" tool.

You have to buy third-party products to get basic functionality -- particularly good forms creation which I needed for our site -- which should be default provided in the core.

DNN is all tables-based too which adds to the complexity, makes it harder though not impossible to work with proper CSS-based designs because the module writers (core and 3rd-party) have not bought into CSS...everything about DNN makes me think it's trying too hard. I would not recommend it to anyone, and I'm not changing my mind...

Or better calendars, events, whatever. The blog module is atrocious, the wiki module is unfathomable to me, my end users would not be able to use it...I could go on and on.

I completely understand about slow load times being a "feature" (aka hassle) of ASP.NET, that's why I will never again recommend or work with an ASP.NET CMS or similar tool...Linux anything is just faster!!

BTW Mitch your tutorials rock. They have undoubtedly made life easier and better for millions of people. :)

Thank you, Tom
