I'm relatively new to DotNetNuke...  I've installed DNN on my laptop, have worked up a "pretty slick" portal and would now like to contact a commercial DotNetNuke provider and "move" what I've got to their site.  Is this possible?

FYI...I've installed DNN on another Vista Ultimate machine and would like to attempt a move of the portal from my laptop to my desktop...one failed attempt later has resulted in my posting to this forum.   Bottomline...can I develop a portal at home - not connected to my commercial hosting site - and "post/move" my portal up to them?

Don,

Glad to hear you're having good success with developing the site on your laptop at least! I can give you some tips as far as moving your site to a production environment.

Firstly, do you have anybody in mind for your hosting provider? One thing that will make this super easy (and, indeed, the only way I ever do it) is to be able to restore your database to their server.  If you purchase a dedicated or virtual dedicated server you will have this ability, but as I do not have much experience with shared hosting accounts, I'm not sure if this ability is widespread or available at all.

The two main things here are just to back up the entire web site's file system and do a complete backup of the database.  Once each of these are done, you are left to basically perform an installation with an already existing site (restore database, set up IIS, set file permissions, configure web config, etc..)

Hope that helps!

Take Care,

Ian
