I'd like to see progress in this area too.  I think the blog module is critical for the overall success of DNN in a world where the trends related to publishing are focused heavily on the blog. 

Regarding images, that's one of the main reasons we created metaPost.  metaPost actually goes way beyond just the blog module as it is designed to function as a bridge between using Windows Live Writer, which makes working with images incredibly easy, and DotNetNuke.  I have some vides on the site you can check out and I'll be officially releasing a new metaPost provider soon for both the Text/HTML module and the FAQs module.  Basically, we're trying to fill in the gaps as much as possible by adding missing features, like true pingbacks, to metaPost so it's available through metaPost providers to module's that either don't have this feature or don't implement it correctly. 

I realize you're probably aware of this, but for other forum readers, the Ventrian News Articles module provides an alternative to the DNN blog if you need multiple authors to a single blog.  It also handles some of SEO issues nicely.
