Hello,
How do I update/upgrade a 3rd party modules?

Let say I had a module called "abc" and the version is 1.0.0.
Later the 3rd party who develop this module make some enhancements and release a new "abc" version 2.0.0

How do I upgrade my "abc" module? I am afraid to delete the current module as it may delete all the related tables in the db.

Please advise

In general, good module design includes a good upgrade policy. In other words, newer versions of modules should never delete tables and recreate them, they should alter tables if necessary.

Of course, you should always inform yourself about 3th party modules. Check the help files, release notes, or ask directly from the module developer whether a new version upgrades older version without losing data.

Even so, it's always best of course, to make a backup of your database, and a backup of your filesystem prior to upgrading. And it couldn't hurt testing the upgrade in a separate test system (with separate database and separate filesystem)

cheers,

erik

Hi ErikVB,

Thank you for your advice.
Ok let say I have this module to upgrade should I remove the old one first and upload the new version module?

Or I just directly upload the new version without removing the old version?

Thanks again

just install new version using "host"::"module definitions" menu item, to avaid loss of content.
