I have seen some literature stating that version 5 of DNN will move away from Solpart menu as a standard. Can someone elaborate on the impact this could have to existing skins that use Solpart? Will the version 5 release be compatible with Solpart for the future? It seems like most all skinners are still putting out solpart menu based skins. What are the skinners thinking about the move?

I have used both CISS Sidemenu from Dao and Telerik, which both are good options. Is the Core Team making any recommendations to skinners on how to move forward with menus in future versions?

I buy a lot of skins for projects and don't want to end up with a bunch of sites that might not work well in future versions.

This might not be a big deal. Maybe DNN will always support Solpart moving forward, but not use is as the default. I just don't know and need a little education.

Thanks and have a great day!

I can't answer directly for Jon (the webcontrols/menu lead), but AFAIK solpart will continue to be supported, but will not continue to be developed due to a certain amount of legacy code. Instead the dnnmenu will be developed to deal with the new needs of the community e.g. xhtml compliance, table-less design etc. Jon's blogs such as http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1511/Default.aspx are the best way to see the forthcoming changes. In the cambrian release(s) there will be lots of skinning enhancements (and a skinning team will be formed) so expect to see some detail coming out then.
