I'm a little confused - I would have thought that enabling compression would compress my .js and .css files as well as the html from default.aspx?

Looking at the NET panel within firebug firefox this doesn't seem to be happening.

When I put the site through this compression checker mentioned elsewhere in the forum the results for my site www.purplepixelmedia.co.uk don't seem to show any difference in total size (although it does pick up that I am using deflate compression.

I am not using the whitespace filter and have temporarily disabled all cacheing incase this is introducing problems.  I have also tried multiple application resarts and app pool recycles.

PS. I am also experiencing another issue which is related to .js files here (I don't know if it could be related)

Thanks,

Matt

when using deflate compression the server detects if the browser supports compressing files. The files are automatically compressed on the server and then decompressed automatically on the browser, therefore they're still the same size when you look at them - the reduced size is for the transmission of the files themselves.

As to your other issue, please ensure that debug is set to false in the web.config otherwise asp.net will automatically send a new copy of the files via axd everytime, rather than checking with the users browser temporary internet files to see if that file already exists with the same criteria (i.e. timestamp and size)

Cheers Cathal (I have used your site more many years btw!)

After what you said I started to look for a different tool and found this: www.vigos.com/products/website-analyzer

They are mainly trying to sell their product, but it is useful for seeing how not only the markup, but supporting files (css and js) too.

As for my other issue, this is still bugging me - debug mode was set to 'false' so really confused!
