Hi,

It seems to me that the search engines and Adsense don't get a great view of my DNN pages.  In particular my Adsense ads (using the DNN Adsense module) strike me as 'not even close' to the content of the page.

Acting on some advice elsewhere on the site I got a view of what the Search Engine sees by looking at the Google Cache of a few pages.  The text in the cache was largely dominated by the text of the menu on my site.  The menu has little relevance to the content of one page.  I'm wondering if I can somehow prevent the menu from rendering to the search engines.  I am assuming that the search engine can still crawl my site because I have and use a site map.  So the search engine should know about all the pages in the site.

Does this idea make sense?  How do I do it?

Best wishes,

You wouldn't want to disable the menu as the crawler uses menu links to find internal links etc.

You might have a look at your skin to see if there are changes you can make to change the layout etc to be more friendly.

That bit makes no sense.. if the menu doesn't relate to the page then one or the other is wrong.

What he probably means is: on a page about blue widgets, there is also a menu with the text "red widgets" (a link to the red widgets page).  So adsense is seeing this text, and showing red widgets ads on the blue widgets page.

Adsense contextual ads can sometimes be pretty bad, and theres not much you can do about it.  Try rearranging the html of your skin so that the menu is after the content, and adsense will see blue widgets first, and might if you are lucky show the blue widgets ads instead of the red widgets ads.  To find out how to rearrange the html so that the menu comes last, but still shows on the left (or right or top), read www.alistapart.com, but its not that easy if you are not a css expert.

JK Is right - that's exactly what I meant.   Thank you JK - you expressed it better than I did.

I took a look at the link you (JK) posted, but I think I have to learn all about CSS to apply that information.  Whilst I'd like to know more about CSS it's not high enough up my priority list to solve this one niggle.

Given I have a site map do how much do I need to care about how the menu renders to the search engine?  The site map tells Google where everything is - right?  So I only need to worry about other search engines - also right?

Thanks everyone for your contributions.
