It was able to install the read the manifest files and run the sql scripts but the rest of the files did not install sucessfully. 

Any ideas what I can do to solve this?

I'd guess you don't have the "permissions" setup on your machine correctly. Win2k3/Vista need the Network Service account to have read/write to the dotnetnuke folder

Win2k/XP need the aspnet user to have access.

I did run a backup of my dnn installation before made this change, so I just restored the backup and moved on. 

this initial problem was that I turned off friendly urls for a third party module. 

turning them on fixed the issues with the events module.
