Hey all,

I have a 2.x DNN site that I'm trying to move the SQLDataProvider key in the DNN tag of the web.config to the machine.config. Whenever I move part or all of the DotNetNuke section, the site stops functioning and I can't really get a good error message.

Has anyone ever done this before? What's the trick?

TIA

Bill

I've never tried it before and am curious to know why you'd want to move the key to the machine.config.

If the site were to get hacked and someone could view all the content of the web itself, they could see the database connection string in the web.config. If it's in the machine.config, they would have to break into more than just the web.

Thoughts?

I haven't heard of a web.config being hacked (as long as security on the server has been setup properly) but I see your concern. I don't know how difficult it would be (or if it's even possible) but the .NET 2.0 Framework does allow for encrypted connection strings. Apparently this can be done using aspnet_regiis (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/k6h9cz8h(VS.80).aspx).

Tried that first. We received an 'Object instance' error that we couldn't work around.

Any more ideas?
