Hi all,

I don't know if this is a bug, or just have to NOT DO THIS, but I have been working on a module with multiple moduledefinitions all using the same directory.  Well i went and deleted 1 of the definitions that i no longer need and it deleted all my freakin files, even though there are other modulesdefinitions that currently use that same directory.

In my opinion dnn should check to see if other moduledefinitions use that directory before deleting evertything in it.  Now i have to go back and redo my last 2 weeks worth of work due to this and it is very frutrating, I am now loosing about $1,000, because i have to do this in my own time rather than charging my client for the work.

Plus it deleted all my database work that i have done, grrrrrrr. WHY ME............

DNN should not touch the Uninstall file or anything unless there are no other modules using that specific directory...........

Damn, I wish I would have seen this post a few hours ago.  Same thing happened to me (although I only lost a days worth of work!).  I was testing a new module and still had some problems.  So, in an attempt to start over, I deleted the module definition through the Module Definition host module.  Zap!  My visual studio still had it loaded but I couldn't find the directory!  At that point I thought no way would dnn delete the entire directory so something must have been messed up when I removed the mod def.  I shut everything down and restarted.  Mistake!  DNN had, in fact, deleted the directory!  My only consolation is that the stuff in the App-Code dir is still safe.

I can't believe that this isn't a bug and that nobody else has had this problem.  What's the deal with this?  How about some help from the DNN core team?  A comment?

Well, better get back to work...

I was also doing some custom module work and frustrated with my results deleted the module definition, and to my horror, it also deleted the entire module directory.  My question is...how does one restore the default modules? If this is the how the "Delete module definition" feature is supposed to work, shouldn't there be SOME kind of confirmation, that you are about to wipe out all of your modules, and not just the one causing problems?

I think this is due to your configuration - for example - I used to keep my modules projects in a separate folder or call them SmartThinker.<Project> and then they would install to Smart-Thinker - <project>.

This meant that the installed version was detached from my source version. The drawback of this is that when developing you have to copy your .ascx files to the install dir if you make changes, but if you uninstall the module then it won't touch your source files.

I am still trying to decide on best practices with this...

Please post the issue into Gemini (http://support.dotnetnuke.us/).  Please give as much information as possible for the issue to be duplicated.  Definately is something that needs to be looked at.

On the other hand, if you have spent so much time developing a DNN module (or any other projecte), why are you not backing them up on a regular basis or at least using version control (SourceSafe is free).  I am not saying this issue is not important to be fixed, but at the same time it is just to easy to back-up projects to nowadays that losing 1-2 weeks of work should not happen.  Well, that is my "Backup, Backup, Backup" soapbox.........
