Agreed - this is a hard lesson to learn, but one every developer needs to get.  I got luck and had an older backup on my first module and I only lost 3-4 days of minimal work.  Still as a matter of safety, there should be some warnings to ensure we don't goof up if at all possible (if it's a cheap solution that doesn't impede other better projects).

My team creates modules locally, keeps in Source Safe, then packages the module and loads to development server. I couldn't imagine the headaches if we were developing directly onto the server with a single copy of the work. If limited to resources, just run two seperate DotNetNuke sites on the same box.
