I am re-creating an exsiting web site that I would like to transfer to a DNN platform. I would think the best way to do this is to create a child portal, create the site and then convert it to a parent portal when I get ready to move the DNS and make the site live.  How do I convert the portal over to a parent portal after creating it as a child?  I know I could use a template but I don't want to have to redefine all my graphic links to point to the correct portal ID.

Since child and parent portals are exactly the same, you don't need to do anything. The difference between the two is merely a naming issue. Parent portals use a fully qualified domain name to be referenced by, and child portals use a domain name + folder name to be referenced by. So, if you want to transform a child portal into a parent portal, all you have to do is to add a new http alias (eg. another domain name, or a subdomain) to the portal. Of course you have to make sure the new domainname is handled by your webserver.

cheers,
