I am trying to add formating to the ascx files using this method.

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/92/threadid/206665/scope/posts/Default.aspx

I have created a new definition of the events module.  however when I ftp the changes they do not show up.

I have cleared the cache.

It won't work if you only copied the files. A new module definition must be registered in the database as well. I can't help you with the details, but if you need support for module deployment, try the programming forum. Good luck!
