Hi,

For SEO reasons I would like to rename one of my oldest portals from it's numeric value of 6 to a name (Out of itnerest, this portal is PokerDIY.com and I think that having the extra keyword ("PokerDIY") in every IMG src will help SEO - opinions?)

Is this even possible? From what I can see, I need to change the PortalAlias record to the new name, and then rename the folder under Portals. Is that all these is to it or is the value stored elsewhere?

Thanks,
Rodney

Sorry, just wanted to add:

I checked the "Create Portal" page - Portal Alias and Portal Home Directory are 2 different things - it looks like the "Portals" table holds the "HomeDirectory" column, so I would need to change this from "Portals/6" to "PokerDIY" I guess. The PortalID in the PortalAlias table remains the same (still numeric).

Can anyone confirm this? I think you'd have to check all modules to see if they storing the full image path and run a SQL script on any table that does...

Lastly - is there a performance impact of using an alaphanumeric field over an integer field? (something like SQL indexing etc, or does it not apply in this case)

Hi Rodeny,

I'm not sure about the details there, but I just thought I'd add a cautionary note that some modules don't seem to like having a proper name for the portal. I was originally only using real names, but after a small number of modules caused problems I had to err on the safe side and now just leave it up to the automatic numbering.

In fact there might even be a clue in that behaviour.. it's similar to how some modules don't work when a friendly name is used. Presumably development guidelines aren't always followed.

I'm also interested in whether SEO is assisted by the path names.

Hey Rob,

The Smart-Thinker UserProfile module was one of these actually - one of our regular users raised this issue last week - I have to be honest I did not even know about that functionality (I don't make portals often). I fixed my modules, but I can see how developers could make the error (it's purely ignorance on my part - assuming that it would always follow the PortalID naming concention - it's best to use PortalSettings.HomeDirectory) - it's a simple fix but yes, it depends on the developer and if they actively work/use the modules - can you think of any modules in particular (I would assume Ventrian modules are ok).

SEO - I guess it just adds more keywords to every page that displays an image retrieved from the portal area - can't be a bad thing - anyone know for sure how much weight this would carry?

hmm it's been a while since I stopped using names for portals... I've checked my notes and I didn't record which modules were troublesome.

I recall that Ventrian had module friendly-name issues back then as did some of yours (and WildModules and quite a few others), but I can't recall which ones also had the portal friendly-name issue. It was definitely problematic enough that I decided the risk was too great.. nowdays I'd probably just jump on the developer and get it fixed.

Scott would no doubt fix up his modules pretty quick if there were a problem.
