I'm wondering what the prodedure would be to upgrade from version .03.03.05. to 04.08.01? Can you upgrade directly to 04.08.01 or go through each consecutive upfrade? Is there the possibility of crashing the site ? ( I wouldn't be able to fix it if it did!) Will the upgrade help in performance of the site (is it worth). Thank you for any help...

Moving from 3.x to 4.x means you are changing from .Net 1 to .Net 2, so you should check your hosting account can be configured to take this into account.

You should be able to upgrade the core in 1 step and yes there is the possibility of crashing the site.  Where it can get problematic is if you have 3rd party modules which don't work under either .Net 2 or the new version of DNN.

I would suggest obtaining a backup of both the files and the database comprising the existing site and set it up in some sort of development enviroment where you can test the upgrade without harming the existing site.  If you are not confident in doing this find someone who can do it for you.

Since 3.3.5 there have been changes to the core code to improve performance, so upgrading  'should' improve you site's performance.  The problem with performance is that there are so many variables without a reasonable detailed investigation you cannot say for certain in this type of forum.
