Let's say I have a page called helloworld.html, and I place it in the root of my DNN site. http://www.myurl.com/helloworld.html

When I try and access this page using the above-mentioned URL, it brings me to a blank page. What am I doing wrong?

Do you actually have some stuff in the page? I once saw where IIS would not serve up a page unless it had some minimal amount of content. So drop in a few lines of text to be sure.
