What is the difference between a "subscriber" and a "registered" user as used in DNN 4.0 out of the box?

How do users automatically get assigned these security roles?

I want to charge users to visit certain pages/functionality within my DNN site. It appears that this is handled via

  • security roles - where you specify the cost/term for each role type
  • site settings - where you specify payment settings

Is this functional in DNN 4.0 out-of-the-box?

Thanks,

Jeff

A subscriber and a registered user are similar.  By deault all users are added to both roles.  The difference is that while the subscribers role can be modified by an Admin the registered users role cannot.

Yes, the subscription capability is avaialable out-of-the-box (although only with Paypal)

There is one other difference: by default, users can subscribe/unsubscribe by themselves from the Subscribers role, while they cannot remove themselves from the Registered Users role

Also you need to be Registered, and authorised to logon to the portal.

You can setup other security roles and charge subscriptions for access the pages protected by those security roles. I kinow this work in DNN 3.x, but can't speak for 4.x (I still awaiting a module change, before I upgrade). Others can say how reliable it is...

Can you set the time of their subscription?  I see the ability to set pricing, trial subscriptions and other in the advanced settings under roles- but I have not been successful making this work.

Is there a certain format to follow, or could you provide a resource with additional documentation?
