I need to upgrade a 04.05.03 installation to a more recent version, but my last attempt at doing it was generally disastrous, back when I was tring to go from a 04.01 release to 04.05.03; I ended up doing a slash & burn and starting over from scratch.

Could someone point out any recent docs or tutorials or helper programs or whatever? I've got some time before I need to do it, but I have to do it right this time, it's for a friends NP site and I don't want to be the person who screwed it up.

paganize,

I'm not aware of any specific upgrade documentation, but the slow and easy approach is probably best.

What I mean by that is to take your time and take some extra precaution so that you don't lose everything and you have a higher chance of it working on the first try.

Step 1: backup the file system completely
Step 2: backup the database completely
Step 3: backup your web.config again even though its in the file system backup
Step 4: paste an install version of the DotNetNuke web application over your site's root.
Step 5: go back and modify your web config with the machine key and connection string, and any other modifications you have made
Step 6: re-apply security permissions to the whole web application file system (ASP.NET or Network Service, whichever is appropriate)
Step 7: hit the site and watch it upgrade

Tip: if you want to upgrade from a very old version, you may want to take the longer route of upgrading in increments. (e.g. if you're on 3.2.2 and want to go to the latest, you should probably do several upgrades instead of one big one....)

Hope that helps, and please anyone else chime in with your thoughts.

Take care,

Ian

the installation guide @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Documentation/tabid/478/Default.aspx is worth reading. Also Erik's blog entries @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/BlogID/94/Default.aspx have some good tips (many of which Ian already mentioned)

I know I have posted this site several times, but it is a really good site for this subject.  When you follow the upgrade steps above you might find that you still get errors.  This is usually because of the dnn scripts installing out of order.  In order to fix that problem follow the upgrade path on the following site

hope this helps

Mike
