How do you guys do it?

If it's time to release an update for a module that doesn't include the source code, how does a customer install it?

I'm currently using the WAP model and all of my code-behind is compiled into an assembly.

I've been programming for a few years, but I'm new to commercial develogpment.

Your comments and pointers (no punn intended)  would be appreciated.

have a look at the DotNetNuke modules that are bundled with the core framework, WAP is very similar to DNN 3 modules. In short description you provide an installation package like for your initial version, but to enable smooth upgrades for users, who already installed a previous version, you need to provide:

  • an incremental Database script named 01.00.01.sqldataprovider (assuming your new version is 01.00.01), adding, modifying and deleting the database objects (tables, relations, views and stored procedures) accordingly
  • optionally a cleanup file for files that are no longer used (01.00.01.txt in the root of your module installation folder
  • make sure, the version number has been upgrades in application and dnn manifest file.
