Hello, I am new to both DNN and programing but want to learn to program DNN modules.  I've been looking at the tutorials I can find online but I seem to be having problems finding something that fits my setup and my needs.  Any suggestions or directions to information would be greatly appreciated.  I am using IIS 7, Visual Studio 2008 Pro, MSSQL 2005 and the latest version of DNN.  I also have access to Visual Web developer if that is a better tool to use than Visual studio.  I understand most of the concepts behind module creation and understand most of what I am reading, but when I sit down and open visual studio Im kind of lost as to what to do.  Honestly I feel like I am missing a step.  All the software is installed and DNN installed perfectly (though not on the first try). The main focus of my module would be allowing users to upload pictures and document files (docs, and plain text mainly.  And taking that information and filling container with that information when the information is called.  Users will need to be able to search the information through site search and will also need to be able to find it by looking in predefined catagories.  I've looked at modules that I think might do what I need but unfortunately cannot afford them right now and am not sure they will do exactly what I need them too.  If there is a reasonably (or cheap) module on the market that will do this and that I can tweak the settings on that would be great also.  I will most likely be trying to use visual basic to create the module if I cannot find a suitable one on the market.  Again any help would be appreciated, either links to tutorials, book suggestions or modules that might fit my needs.

Thank you

Greg

Hey Greg,

I read that you had been looking at tutorials and are having trouble finding something that meets your needs...have you taken a look at any of Michael Washington's tutorials? He has a bunch of great tutorials on his DotNetNuke Help website - you should check those out if you haven't already!

Also, you may be interested to know that Engage Software provides hands-on classroom based training in St. Louis, MO.

Greg, take a look at the DotNetNuke Repository Module that comes bundled  free with DNN. It might be able to do what you want, if not, it's easy to 'tweak'. If you have any questions feel free to post them in the Repository forum and we'll help you get started.  There is a user's guide on the project downloads page that should provide you with a quick overview of the module and what it can do.

Thank you for the information, its been very helpful.  I've played with the repository module and it seems to do the things I want to do for the most part but doesn't look the way I need it to look.  You mentioned a repository forum I can post on, I did not see that in the list here, I think I just need to go read all the post so if you could give me a link I'll check it out.  Thanks again for the help, I'm pretty new to this stuff and just trying to get a hang of things. I've got some more books on the way but they are taking to long getting here, hopefully they will help.

thanks

Greg
