hello,

i have just set DNN up for the first time. i installed it on my personal server, so that a customer can check it out -- this non-profit is considering DNN, which would be hosted w/ a 3rd party hosting company.

one thing im not clear on -- what is the Host Portal? is this the portal that the host uses for administerring DNN? or is this just the initial portal?

i see that i have one portal right now, the Host Portal i created during installation. now, do i want to create a new one for my customer? or rename the lone portal after my customer? (this customer may wish to create sub-portals of his own in the future).

thanks!
matt

when dotnetnuke is installed two users are created, an admin user and a host user. If you login as host you will see admin and host menus, if you login as an admin you will only see an admin menu. The host menu allows you to do things such as create other portals, install modules, alter scheduled tasks etc. The host user is also automatically an admin user in each portal. I don't know the term "host portal" but I would assume someone meant "logged in as host user, seeing the host menu item". If you want a customer to create subportals they will need host level access at the moment.

i understand the two users, but i am referring to something that the installation actually caled the "Host Portal". it seemed to imply that it was a portal related to the host. i thought perhaps it was a required host portal of some sort.

however, it sounds like youre saying only a host account is necessary for host-level-functions, not a host portal.

When DNN refers to the host portal, it is by default the first portal created (the one created on install).  The true nature of it isn't all that important, but it is the one that will be shown on skins where you have the "host" skin object placed in it.  (Typically for child portals).
