Hi all,

I'm new to DNN and I'm considering using it to start up my own web development company.

I had planned on using a DNN hosting company and setting up some sort of reseller account with them.

I figured that I would have to set up a fresh account with the hosters for each of my customers so each one would have their own proper domain name i.e. www.bigcakes.com or www.learnspanish.com rather than have a portal off the address that I create i.e www.mattsmegadevelopment.com/bigcakes.

However, I have been reading the online help (yes I'm one of those) and I discoverd Portal Aliases.

Am I right in thinking that I can start a single account with the hosting company for www.mattsmegadevelopment.com and then set up new portals for each customer with a Portal Alias so that when someone types www.bigcakes.com they actually go to the www.mattsmegadevelopment.com/bigcakes but still only see www.bigcakes.com as the URL?

I hope I'm reading it right because it would be much cheaper froma hosting point of view.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

you're right, portal aliases work like this. Your customers will only see their own domain shown in the address bar, but this will need all the domains to be correctly set up in IIS and pointed to the one and only DNN installation (the DNS will need to point there too). They will share one database and all the framework, along the modules' dlls.

Best regards,
Dario Rossa

Thanks Dario,

That sounds good.

So I'll just point all my customers DNS registrations to the IIS box of the hosting company and if they've set it up correctly it will direct them all to my single DNN install which in turn will determine which portal and URL to display.

Thanks.

Portal aliasing works well for the HTTP service (Webpages), but e-mail is a different story.  You need to make sure that your hosting provider can provide separate e-mail service for the aliased domains.  Most (maybe all) of the hosting companies that advertise DNN hosting do not have an option for a separate e-mail setup.  Usually what happens is whatever e-mail accounts are set up on the primary domain are duplicated on the aliased domain and all email sent to either address (i.e. me@primarydomain.com, me@domainalias.com)  goes to the same account.  One option is to set up hosting accoutns with two different ISP's, one for e-mail and another for your DNN install and then set up the DNS records so that the MX records point to the hosting provider that you are using for e-mail.
