Just because someone uses PHP instead of ASP(.NET) this doesn't mean that that someone hates Microsoft. I'm sure that Microsoft's internet tecnologies, sutch as ASP.NET, have their own advantages but PHP and similar web languages and tecnologies have some points that makes people think twice. First of all, its free. Free and open-source witch allows hundreds of developers to improve and expand it. Its universal. Almost every server in the world runs it. Has a C-like syntax, witch makes it very easy to understand and its very easy to move from other languages (C, C++, Java, even C#) to PHP. It is compatible with almost every web and database tecnology being used (ISS, Apache, MySQL, PostgreSQL, even MS-SQL, Oracle, etc) all over the world. Well, there are a lot of points. The history repeats itself with ISS and Apache... In the other side, ASP.NET has Microsoft and it's know-how in the background. And it can be used with several languages, witch makes it easy to use by everyone who knows about programming.

In my opinion it does not really matter what technology had been used as long as the end result is satisfactory. Of course it might be hard for you to prove you're right in your choice of DNN since to do that you'd have to compare the site you've created with the equivalent PHP-based site, which is nonexistent. So, basically, it's a matter of trust...

P.S. Anyone who says that one site is better than the other simply because of the programming language that was used is (let's put it this way) not a very bright man.

Wow, thanks for all the great discussion, I really appreciate all the comments.  I did a bit of research and then wrote a good letter to my client stating that I was very happy with the review in general.  I defended my choice in platform by showing some statistics where 53% of the Fortune 1000 use ASP or ASP.NET including SeaRay (who paid for the critique).

I look forward to trying Page Blaster John, thanks for that.

I agree with  the points raised here, and it's a good sign to have a discussion on competing technologies without it descending into name calling and meaningless-statistic quoting.

I'd just like to clear up the one point I made about Microsoft-haters.  I'm well aware that plenty of PHP programmers aren't Microsoft haters, but in my experience a lot of people will use a non-Microsoft technology just for the point of it being not Microsoft.  And they will actively denigrate any Microsoft products just because of their dislike of the company.  You'll know these people as they like to put '$' in for the s in Microsoft when they write forum posts.   All technologies should be judged on their merits, not on the brand name on the box.  I'm not suggesting that the consultant in question falls in this category, merely that the category exists.

I had some guy who told me they were "morally opposed to supporting any microsoft product"  while explaining how the dnn structure works and as I went back and looked at his screen shots of what he wanted to achieve, taken from an Internet Explorer screen thanks very much, as well as asking him about whether he ran Outlook 2003 or 2007 (which he ran 2003) I said - "Please.. don't be a hypcrite bagging the very company who's product you use to run your business. If you ran a linux computer with all linux software, I'd give you some credit ....." (amongst other words a lady can't put on this forum)  Honestly - that comment from him was stupid beyond belief and I have no time for people who talk this sort of rubbish.. that's what it is..

Anyways - it was a good laugh at the time and good for 'rolling the eyes and saying .. here we go again" and I still argue with my son who loves his linux and we will continue to it in other areas we feel it's got more functionality with, but confesses to asking his mum to setup a dnn site and forum because he wanted a website and forum in one, so that was a one up for mum!

I run both Linux and Windows boxes.  We run our mail from a Linux box on our own compiled flavour of Linux, as well as Windows, and I am a humoured at times at the double standards so many people take with their stupid comments and being Windows / Microsoft haters..

And I've seen some really crappy, ugly, slow and full of errors in php sites as well. My response to those sites is not that PHP is lousy but the development of it was.

Interesting opinions from people here too.
