Site was working all fine, did not do any changes since a week. Today logged in and tried to go to Admin->Event Viewer and to my surprise following error. I don't know why and how to fix it. Guru's please help.

I thank you much.

this typically indicates that your eventlog has grown too large to view in the maximum commandtimeout time (note: this sproc was optimised recently, 4.8 AFAIR, so if youre running an earlier version I recommend you upgrade). You can fix this error by clearing out the event table.

To do so, log in as Host  and go to Host->SQL and run the following:

truncate table eventlog

FYI: this post has some good background on why this might happenhttp://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/-1/threadid/215601/scope/posts/Default.aspx

Note: I've just realised that this may be the reason why your captcha is reporting an error i.e. there is a scheduled task that tries to clear out old eventlog entries. If this fails (i.e. via a timeout) then the eventlog grows and grows, and this can cause app recycles particularly if youre using xmllogging rather than database logging (as the entire xml file get's loaded into webserver RAM)

Check your web.config to see what logging you're using, it should look like this:

<logging defaultProvider="DBLoggingProvider">

Cathal, sincere thanks for quick reply. My logging is indeed set to "DBLoggingProvider". However, you are right my eventlog has grown to 13500+ and is growing more by 100's every 5 or so mints. I guess this is happening because just today I purchased the "Hacker Safer Certification" for my site and they are running some thorough remote vulnerability scans. I will let the scan finish and then move the data to history table and see if it helps. Will get back to you in next 12 hours.

once again I thank you much for the guidance and will get back to you in 10-12 hours.

Sincerely,

Sid,

glad to see you've discovered the reason behind it, i would guess that the remote scan is also causing your captcha issue. I've created an issue (http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?ID=7246&PROJID=2) for this scenario so we can consider adding exclusion IP/Url's for exception management in a future release.

Cathal

Thanks Cathal, appreciate your help. Actually this did happened because yesterday I purchased hacker safe certification for my site. They ran remote hacking simulations and many other scans which pumped around 13000+ entries in my event log. I so feel that the design should be such that it should page no matter how many rows are in event log, an intelligent pagging mechanism should be able to do that, never the less that's not my immidiate concern.

Can you guide how can I use the "host->scheduler" to purge my event log every 12 hours? I have actually created a history log table, and would like to configure in such a way that all entries from eventlog table be moved to the history table before eventlog is purged - if this not possible, I would atleast like to automatically purge the event log every twelve hours as its too much to log in everyday and purge the event log table manually. I need this as hacker safe run simulations every twelve hours.

I thank you much in advance.

Sincerely,
