We need to ensure that the display name that the user enters is unique.

The only idea I could come up with was to create a database trigger on the users table on insert to check to see if the display name is unique. If it is I raise an error:

('The display name you entered has already been used by someone else. Please try another display name.', 10, 1) WITH NOWAIT

This does prevent the user from registering if the display name is not unique, but the message I created in the raiserror statement is not displayed on DNN. Instead a message that is displayed is

"An Unexpected Error Occurred During Registration. Please Contact The Portal Administrator For Futher Information"

This does not help as if the user does not know what the error is he will not be able to rectify it.

Does anyone know if there is another way to make sure the display name is unique

We dont want to alter any core code. Do you perhaps know of a way to raise an error in a SQL stored proc or trigger so that it will be dislayed in DNN? That would be an easy solution and would also assist us on applying some other busines logic to the core modules.

Yes that is an option, however we need both the username and the display name and both must be unique. We do not want them to be one and the same.
