I am just trying to figure out the LiveID and OpenID situation. I use several modules from www.37signals.com and they say if I get an OpenID I can use it to easily switch between their apps.

So I was thinking that DNN used OpenID but on further review I see that it is LiveID. My understanding is that LiveID is a Microsoft thing. Is it a replacement for my Passport ID?

Does the main DotNetNuke site support logging in using either OpenID or LiveID? I see some DNN blogging about OpenID and LiveID source code, but I assume that is if I want to build a custom login module to allow either ID for login.

I know I am going to get an OpenID because of how it will help me with my 37signals apps. I see that there are so many providers to get an OpenID. What are the factors I should take into consideration to determine where to get my OpenID?

Thanks for any guidance on this.

FYI: We do have an openID provider (See downloads page @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/125/default.aspx)

1. yes, effectively liveID is being positioned as a replacement for passport

2. we only currently support liveID and forms authentication

3. AFAIR the reason we don't use openID on dotnetnuke.com is that the openID provider requires Full trust as the code needs access to certain crytpo namespaces. As dotnetnuke.com runs under medium trust we can't enable it.
