Hi everybody.
First, forgive my english, it isn't my language.
I am working on a new DNN site. I am "migrating" another site (an asp.net application) .
In the old site username and password were in "clear" and with less restriction on password lenght.
So, for that reason, i set the correct parameters in webconfig (clear password, 4 minimum leght) so i can migrate old user DB into the new one.
What I wish do after import user db, is set back password lenght and, most of all, MD5 hash for password.
Is it possible if i change again web config after import?
Are there any alternative for import user database without force old user to re-register again?
Thans in advice for help.

Dino.

Hi Dino,

I believe you will be safe with changing the password length in your web.config after you have finished your integration.  I may be corrected here, but I'm pretty certain that DNN will start using the new length for all new passwords (via new user registration, password reset, and password changes) and be perfectly happy with existing shorter passwords.

You will not be able to directly enable the MD5 hashing on your membership database.  Existing passwords must first be hashed properly; it's an all-or-nothing proposition.  While I am not aware of any existing utility that does this for you, I would be very surprised if there wasn't something floating out there.  I would spend some time googling.  Someone else may be able to jump in here with better advice on this topic, as well.

Hope this helps!  Your English is very good!

Brandon

Yes, there are plenty of user import modules.. check on Snowcovered.com or the DNN marketplace here. Some of them simply transfer from one DNN portal to another, but some also let you control how the data is imported.

I'm also pretty sure tha Brandon is correct about the password length not being enforced by default for existing accounts. But it's a simple one digit change in the web.config to make it any length you like. Just do that first thing after installation.
