Can anyone tell me how to link to a file on a remote file server (not the DNN install location).  I have a sql table with records of file locations that I need to provide a list of links to in a gridview or detailsview.  I would prefer to create the link in my SQL query something along the lines of -

Select '<a href="http://' + [FileLocation] + '">' + [FileDescription] + '</a>' as FileLink

Where the data stored in [FileLocation] would be something like ServerName\Folder\filename.ext

I can't seem to get the link to go outside the DNN site.

Is it not possible to link to another file server?  Thanks for any help.

not sure what it is you are trying to do here. First of all, i would build the actual url in the grid template, using data formating code. Second.. i dont understand what you mean that you cannot link outside dnn. What url do you get, and why doesnt it actually link to another server?

Sorry, I know that wasn't very clear at all after I reread the post.   What I am trying to do is download files from a UNC share drive.  I need to build the url in the query as I am using a third party report builder and I don't want to have to dig into the code unless I have to.  I can get the links to work and show up on the page but the exact syntax of the url is what I need.  The way I have been building it, www.<site>.com is always added before the UNC share location so it ends up being something like http://www.<site>.com/\\FileServer\Folder\filename.ext

Thanks for your help I hope this clears up my question.

you cannot link to UNC paths, since they are not reachable from the client pc, the only protocols you can use are http and https. you need either to publish the path, where the file is located or you need to copy the file to a public path or you need to write a custom handler, which can open a file stream on the UNC share and output it to the user computer.

Thanks, after doing some more research this morning I decided this was not possible also.  Thanks for helping and confirming my conclusion.  I will have to come up with something custom.
