I have a menu requirement a such:

First root menu item requires background image X.

Second root menu item requires background Y.

Third root menu item requires background Z.

Can solpart menu achieve this? Or any recommended alternatives?

You can do this with nav menu 2.0 currently in beta. You are more than wecom to try it out see: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1675/Default.aspx

Otherwise, you could use snapsis, a commercial menu control on www.snapsis.com

Do you mean the <DNN:DNNMenu  From the dotnetnuke.webcontrols.dll ?

I found a download section for this - but it appears to be beta:
