By fortune, I had a look into this area last night, for the next UDT version shall be able to use file links by ID as well, but the problem I currently have, that this might only work with original sized images since I haven't found an option yet to chain the http handlers via URL.

Personally I don’t see this as an issue. Why wouldn’t anyone prefer to size their images before they made them available to the UDT, particularly if the images were placed in some type of “secured store”?

James,

no offense, but this is the point: UDT is created for a number of use cases, e.g. for granting permissions to all users in a role to add and edit their own entries, upload files and images. In this case, you cannot expect all to be sized equally, as you would like to display them neatly in the list. Creating modules for a general auditory forces us to have all identified scenarios in mind and try to find a more or less generic solution - this is the difference towards user defined modules - and our challence.

No offense taken.  I’m just suggesting that if the files need to be secured then the user should expect to have to apply more control and possibly have less flexibility, thereby justifying the sizing limitation you mentioned previously.

Regardless, this is not going to change soon so what are your recommendations to make it more difficult for malicious users that are not members (not registered users that can log in) to get a hold of the image files.

James,

please be aware, that even unsecure folders offer some protection against unauthorized access: if you don't grant publically to browse folders (which you usually shouldn't), a user needs to know or be able to guess the name and location of a file or get the link to it from an authorized user (in contrary, files from secure folders are only delivered using a handler, which checks everytime for appropriate permission before prsenting the file).
