Joking apart, its good to see he's using some C# in the module tutorials - if I was granted a single wish the one thing I'd change about DNN is to have it re-written from VB into C# having arrived at this point via C, C++ and Java.

Well, essentially there is no real need to go back (or forward) to VB. If you do not want, there is no need at all to look into the source of the (core) modules. And essentially, there is not much diference between VB.NET or C#, it's a matter of personal preference. We develop modules for clients, sometimes in VB, other times in C#, C# getting a little more preference, it sounds more professional (but sound is all there is to it).

Have you come across the other Wrox books on DNN - there's one on skinning and another on module development, I believe - are they worth buying?

Have a look at DNN Creative magazine (http://www.dnncreative.com/). It is not so much as a normal magazine, but we found the video based material highly useful. We have a subscrioption from day one and have learned a lot.

Have fun!

I agree that DNNCreative is a great site. I'm already a member and, when learning about skinning in DNN in few weeks ago, I found it to be the most useful source of training material. There's a lot of material on the site and it's good value, in my opinion.

I've not been there recently since I find it thin on module development which I'm now learning about. I think the Washington site mentioned previously is the best tutorial on module development I've found so far and is much easier to follow than the outdated Wrox book. Choosing to cover the Events module in the Wrox book was probably misguided IMHO as its rather complex compared to the Survey module covered by Michael Washington.

The DNNCreative site - good though it is - is also somewhat out of date, it has to be said. I had some problems with their tutorial on the SolPart menu when trying to get the Nav menu to work in 4.8.2, since this is not covered. I eventually succeeded, but only but persevering with this myself (there is a posting on DNNCreative with my findings). I gather that Lee Sykes is considering covering the Nav menu in a tutorial at some point in the future.

I can't agree with your comments on VB versus C#, I'm afraid, but there's no point in dragging up those tired old arguments here again. We each have our preferences (and our prejudices I'm afraid), and its probably best to leave it at that. One good thing about working in .NET is that at least we have more choice over which language to use.
